How Much Slower Is A Bar Bag?

Can gravel bikes be aero and should you even care? Ollie tested some gravel tech in the wind tunnel to see how much it may be slowing you down on a big ride like Unbound. We also look at a new carbon threaded bottom bracket and some aero disc brake covers in Hot Tech, as well as going through your comments and Bike Vault submissions.

Some new brands, some small brands, some big brands, and some futuristic brands, you get the gist. Enjoy!

Do More Carbs = Better Cycling Performance?

Pro cyclists can now eat as many as 200g of carbohydrate per hour, as Conor recently found out in our deep dive video with Bora-Hansgrohe nutritionist Tim Podlogar. So, should we all be eating more carbs when cycling? Conor and Manon find out by going on a ride where Conor eats 200g carbs per hour and Manon fuels normally. Who will be freshest at the end?

Sea Otter 2023 | Released, unreleased and prototype mountain bikes from Nukeproof, Pole, Vitus and Yeti

From BikeRadar.com

Released, soon to be released and probably not going to be released bikes from the Sea Otter Classic

By

Sea Otter presents the press and public an opportunity to ogle over new bikes, and brands are keen to fill their stands with their most eye-catching models for the world to see.

While brand-new launches are less common at trade shows these days, there are still new bikes we’ve not seen in the flesh yet.

In addition, a few brands are brave enough to show off as-yet-unfinished models, teasing us with some pre-launch goodies.

Nukeproof has released the carbon version of the Dissent DH bike, following plenty of testing from pros across the 2022 downhill season.

The frame’s carbon front and rear triangles create a bike that’s as adjustable as they come, with a number of geometry and suspension tweaks available at the tip of your Allen key.

Replaceable headset cups offer +/- 6mm reach adjustment, while the chainstays can be altered in length with a three-position chip in the rear half of the bike.

Bike corridors are on the way

From OrangeCountyTribune.com

Do you like to bike but are a little wary of sharing a lane with a car or truck?

There’s help on the way. The Garden Grove City Council on Tuesday will consider awarding a contract to Southstar Engineering & Consulting, Inc. for management of the construction of a major bicycle corridor program in the city.

CalTrans in 2018 awarded Garden Grove $1.1 million in grant funds to improve on-street bicycle infrastructure by 75 percent. The end result should be the establishment of five major corridors:

  • Brookhurst Street (from Trask Avenue to Katella Avenue)
  • Western Street (from Garden Grove Boulevard to Orangewood Avenue)
  • Chapman Avenue (from Valley View Street to Beach Boulevard)
  • Gilbert Street (from Deodora Drive to Katella Avenue)
  • Lampson Avenue (from Dale Street to Haster Street).

The project will include striping buffers on existing bike lanes, striping bike lane network gaps, improving and creating bicycle routes and providing wayfinding signs.

Southstar’s bid is for $135,805. Construction should be completed by August 2023, according to a city staff report.

‘World’s longest’ purpose-built cycling tunnel opens in Norway

From CNN.com

By , CNN

There are many ways to explore the seven mountains that surround the picturesque UNESCO World Heritage city of Bergen on Norway’s fjord-studded west coast. The newest, however, might well be record-breaking.

A three-kilometer-long (1.8-mile) cycling and pedestrian tunnel has been blasted through the base of Løvstakken mountain and its makers say it’s the longest purpose-built tunnel of its kind.

Fyllingsdalstunnelen, as it’s known, opened on April 15 with a family day of sporting activities, following four years of construction that began in February 2019. The state-funded mega-project cost close to $29 million, or 300 million Norwegian kroner.

“We Norwegians are usually modest people,” Camilla Einarsen Heggernes, a spokesperson for rail company Bybanen Utbygging, tells CNN, “But in this instance we would say that the tunnel is 100% state of the art.”
