Wide tyres take over Strade Bianche: Gallery

A look at the men’s and women’s tyre setups at the Italian one day classic

Every year around Strade Bianche, the conversation in the Cyclingnews tech team follows a trend: One of us will ask what clever tech we expect riders to use to overcome the difficult terrain of the dusty white roads, then we’ll all watch in earnest hoping for something crazy to leave us speechless, and eventually we’ll all conclude that the only thing mechanics have changed is a swap to wider tyres. Of course, somewhere along the way someone will suggest it should be a monument.

This year, as Lotte Kopecky beat out Elisa Longo Borghini, and Tadej Pogacar went solo from 81km out, the theme was no different.

As my esteemed colleague, Will Jones, pointed out in his Omloop Het Nieuwsblad tech gallery, the two pelotons’ bikes are really capable, and generally very good, so there’s no need for bonkers tech hacks, nifty suspension solutions, or Allen keys taped to seatposts.

Despite this, with the real Monuments still yet to come, tyre choice and bike setup is something riders and their teams will be toying with.

Update: Pirelli extends recall of P Zero Race TLR tyres to USA and Canada

From BikeRadar.com

Tyres manufactured between 10th and 24th week of 2023 included in recall

By ,

Pirelli has extended its recall of the P Zero Race TLR tyres to the USA and Canada.

A recall was first issued in July to tyres in Europe and the UK only, but now Pirelli says 15,000 tyres in the USA and Canada are also affected.

Pirelli published news of the recall on 7 September, stating: “Consumers should stop using the product immediately and contact Pirelli with any questions. Consumers are eligible to receive either a full refund or a replacement tyre.”

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says Pirelli received a report of rapid air loss, resulting in a minor injury.

The new Pirelli Cinturato Gravel RC tyre has a mountain-bike inspired tread for aggressive gravel racing

The racing version of the Cinturato Gravel borrows from the brand’s Scorpion XC RC tyre

Pirelli has announced the Cinturato Gravel RC, a gravel racing tyre with a cross-country mountain biking tread.

The tubeless-ready Cinturato Gravel RC is an updated version of the Cinturato Gravel M, a tyre designed for muddy conditions.

The Cinturato Gravel RC’s tread is less aggressive, but retains relatively tall, widely spaced shoulder knobs alongside a smoother centre pattern.

Pirelli says this design originates from its Scorpion XC RC cross-country mountain biking tyre.

In addition, Pirelli claims the Cinturato Gravel RC contains the SpeedGRIP compound, allowing you to “easily tackle every surface, from asphalt to gravel to off-road”.

The compound is nearly as durable as that used in its mountain bike tyres, according to Pirelli.

The brand also says the compound provides “excellent grip on wet surfaces and a reduction in rolling resistance very close to that of a pure road tyre”.
