Best gravel bike pedals 2024

From BikeRadar.com

By Katherine Moore

Investing in a set of the best gravel bike pedals can make a world of difference to your riding, improving power transfer and impacting the overall feel of your gravel bike.

The gravel market has grown considerably in recent years and we now have dedicated gravel shoes, tyres and even handlebars. But the best gravel bike pedals are by and large mountain bike pedals.

There are two main reasons for this. Mountain bike pedals are good at shedding dirt, so won’t struggle to clip in on a muddy ride. They also make walking easier because the small, two-bolt cleats can be recessed into the soles of your shoes.

Is gravel racing saving the US cycling scene? We speak to riders, team owners and event organisers to find out

From BikeRadar.com

By Ben Delaney

Two parallel trends exist in the United States at the moment: road racing, especially at the professional level, has been on a steep decline, while gravel racing, which is primarily an amateur, participatory sport, is going gangbusters.

Gone in the US are major pro stage races such as the Amgen Tour of California, the Tour de Georgia, the Tour of Utah and others – and with them the number of pro teams has dwindled.

Ten years ago, the US had 19 professional teams at the UCI level. This year, there are 11, and the major squads such as EF Education and Lidl-Trek operate almost exclusively in Europe.

At the amateur level, participation in road racing is also on the decline.

Meanwhile, gravel events continue to explode around the US, with Unbound Gravel attracting 5,000 riders, SBT GRVL selling out at 3,000 riders and scores of other events catering almost entirely to amateur participants.

The 10 Best Road Bikes of 2023

If you want to ride on pavement, whether that’s roads or bike paths, a road bike is the most efficient tool for the job. Within the realm of pavement pedaling, road bikes are ideal for a broad spectrum of pursuits, from getting fit to winning races.

Features to Consider When Shopping for Road Bikes

Road bikes come with carbon fiber, aluminum, titanium, or steel frames and forks, and they’re usually spec’d with stable and speedy 700C wheels with relatively skinny tires. That wheel and tire combo offers reduced rolling resistance and less drag than the chunkier tires found on mountain bikes and some gravel

Gearing: If your last road bike was an old ten-speed, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the range of gearing available on modern road bikes. While some have a single chainring and others have two, today’s models typically deliver a wider spread of gearing options for powering up hills and hitting top speed on flat pavement.

Geometry: If you’re a racer, you’ll want a bike that’s aerodynamic, which means it has the lowest possible wind resistance. It’s also good to opt for a frame with more aggressive geometry: When you’re riding, your torso will be close to the bike’s top tube. Although the bike can feel less stable when you’re descending or cornering, it’ll help you shave seconds off your time.

Planning on touring or doing long-distance rides? Opt for a bike with more relaxed geometry for a more comfortable body positioning and less fatigue after long hours in the saddle. You’ll also want to make sure it has the fittings for racks, bags, and bottles.
