The Consumer Electronics Show returns this week with more exciting new tech. Here’s our pick of the most interesting cycling-related gadgets…
Of course, the word ‘interesting’ can cover a lot of different things but these include smart tyres, a smart bed and smart watches, as well as, noise-cancelling earphones and “the lightest turbo trainer” on the market.
Space-age METL airless bicycle tyre
What do you think of these blue tyres originally developed and tested by NASA for future Mars Rover missions?
First up on our list of winners are tyres from The SMART Tire Company. The METL bicycle tyre is made from Shape Memory Alloy Radial Technology (SMART), a superelastic material called NiTinol+.
Due to the elasticity and high energy return of these alloys, The SMART Tire Company says that METL is the first airless tyre to feature low rolling resistance and a smooth ride for cyclists, in addition to eliminating flats.

Give your bicycle a designated spot!
Over the past few years, bikes have grown in popularity. At that same, the mode of transportation has got people pondering…where and how should they be stored? You’ve probably learned by now that simply leaning your bike against the wall with the kickstand will not suffice. Not only will you scrape up your wall, but you may also end up knocking it over or running into it.
There has to be a better way, right? Lucky for you, we’ve scoured the Internet for the best bike storage racks that work indoors, outdoors, in small spaces, garages, basements, and more, so you can safely store your bike(s) while getting some much-needed real estate back in your home.
When choosing the products, we considered customer reviews, price, and ease of installation. We also wanted to give you different mounting options like on the ceiling or wall, and freestanding as well since we know not everyone can drill into their walls. All in all, there’s definitely something for everyone on this list, so start scrolling to find your perfect bike storage rack.
We know that bigger brakes can stop you faster, but what about their efficiency? We went to Girona to find out whether a bigger disc brake rotor will not only have a lower peak temperature, but also dissipate heat faster than a smaller disc brake rotor. It’s time for some GCN Science!

Here are 10 of the peloton’s most gifted talents to look out for next season

Now the curtain has drawn on the 2022 road season, focus is already shifting to what next year might bring. Who’s destined for a career-defining victory? Who will emerge as the next big thing?
It’s impossible to keep an eye on everyone, so here are 10 of the most promising up-and-coming riders to watch in 2023.
FRED WRIGHT
You can’t help but get the feeling that something big is coming for Fred Wright. The Brit enjoyed his best season to date in 2022, but despite his plucky determination, a WorldTour win still eluded him.
Wright came agonisingly close to victories at the Tour de France and Vuelta a España this season, but both times had to settle for second behind Danish powerhouse and former world champion Mads Pedersen.
In the first half of 2023, Wright is likely to aim for the Monuments and his Bahrain Victorious teammate Matej Mohorič believes it’s only a matter of time before he wins one. After his valiant display in April’s Tour of Flanders, it’s hard not to think the same.

The Australian rode 52 Everestings and an additional 2,068m of climbing on his ‘off days’
After a year-long quest, the Australian has ridden an astonishing 1,000,000 metres (3,280,839.9 feet) of elevation, which would put one deep into outer space.
To reach this distance, Thompson completed one Everesting per week for 52 weeks in a row and an additional 2,068m of elevation on his “off days”. A popular challenge during the COVID years, an Everesting is a ride in which one completes the height of Mt. Everest —8,848.9m or 29,032 feet— in a series of hill repeats up the same mountain and without any sleep breaks.
To keep things interesting, Thompson completed his Everestings in various countries, encouraging people to ride along and develop a community.
Thompson reached his 1-million-meter mission after 261 active days of riding and 52 cumulative days of rest.
The accomplishment left him feeling a “rollercoaster of emotions,” Thompson states on social media.
“I’ve never been as fit as I am right now, I’ve never been as fatigued as I am right now, I’ve never been as emotionally drained as I am right now and I’ve never been as proud of myself as I am right now.”
Gravel rides are all about getting into the wilderness, escaping from the hustle and bustle of modern life and embracing the wild, right? Well Si doesn’t think so, and has organised an urban gravel ride in his home city, Bristol in England, with Conor to prove it! Can you really have a gravel ride in the city?

Innovation continues to propel cycling into the future, and this year’s releases were no exception.
They say once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget. There’s scientific evidence to back this up, but in our minds, it’s not so much the mechanism of procedural memory that locks the experience in the body and mind forever: it’s the fact that propelling yourself on two wheels is about as much fun as anything we’ve experienced.
The thrill produced by cycling is matched only by the thrill of kitting yourself out for riding on two wheels. (It all goes back to cycling, at the end of the day.) 2022 was a year of exciting releases, timely upgrades and just enough innovation to keep us on our toes, wondering what’s around the proverbial bend. The following products were standouts in a sea of compelling releases this year.
Priority’s updated Apollo is unique, reliable and high on the smiles per dollar scale. While the Apollo isn’t the fastest or lightest gravel bike ever, it might just be the smoothest and most reliable option — with a heck of a lot of bang for 2,000 bucks. That value is enhanced by the fact you won’t be needing to take this bike in for maintenance anytime soon. You’ll ride a lot of miles before spending another penny, and if your experience is anything like mine was, the adventure just might feel, well, out of this world.

And a lot of earmarks for trails, complete streets and more.
The massive new federal funding bill making its way through Washington includes $45 million in much-needed funds for active transportation projects — but it’s still a tiny fraction of what American communities actually need.
As part of the $1.7-trillion Consolidated Appropriations Act released Tuesday, the House Appropriations Committee announced that it would finally fund the new Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which will issue discretionary grants to help U.S. communities address dangerous gaps in their bike lane, sidewalk, and multi-use trail networks.
That great news was soured slightly, though, by the dollar figure attached to it. Though Congress has the authority to give the active transport program up to $200 million a year for the next five years, the funding bill would grant it just $45 million for fiscal year 2023 — which is less than 10 percent of the annual $500 million advocates initially requested.
To put it that in perspective, communities seeking to build new infrastructure using funds from the new program (rather than applying for planning grants, which the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program will also fund) will need to submit projects with total costs in excess of $15 million. That means that just three communities could consume the entire pot of funding, if their poverty rates were high enough to meet the criteria for a 100-percent federal share — and that’s not even taking into account the administrative costs of running the program itself.
