Smith bike helmets to use Aleck crash sensor technology

Smith will include Aleck crash sensor technology on bike helmets that will be released in the U.S. next year. Earlier this year, Aleck — which makes wireless helmet audio systems for outdoor sports — acquired Tocsen, a German startup that developed the sensor technology.

Aleck also sells a Tocsen crash sensor that can be attached to existing helmets.

The sensor detects serious crashes and alerts emergency contacts as well as users of the Heroes Nearby mobile app if they are within 1.8 miles of the incident.

Aleck said Smith is the first brand in North America to launch cycling helmets featuring integrated Aleck CS, which will debut in four models for spring 2024.

“We are excited to announce our partnership with Smith and the work we’re doing to bring crash-sensing technology to more cyclists,” said Stephen Catterson, founder and CEO of Aleck. “The integration of Aleck CS into premium helmets elevates head protection to include impact detection and a valuable connection to help in the event of a serious crash, especially for those riding alone on roads or trails.”

Aleck and Smith have previously collaborated on audio systems for snow helmets. This is the first Smith/Aleck project launch specific to cycling. Tocsen has previously worked with European bike helmet brands including uvex, Alpina and EKOÏ.

New El Monte Bike Lanes Connect to Transit Station and More

Two recent bike lane stripings in El Monte’s downtown area near the Valley Mall offer the area’s working class cyclists a safer ride to the the El Monte Transit Station off Ramona Boulevard, as well as the Metrolink Station on Tyler Avenue.

The lanes were installed on roads already heavily used as alternates to the town’s hectic arteries (Valley Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue): Tyler as the north-south route, and Ramona, as an east-west proxy for Valley. Of course, the two meet just south of the Valley Mall, providing an opportunity for transit commuters to get off Santa Anita on their way down to Ramona.

Both of these roads are highly traveled by cars too, and thankfully the striping took this into consideration, marking separate car parking beside Tyler’s mom-and-pop markets, and buffering stripes and bulbouts (both striped and cement) along various parts of the two routes.

Local El Monte mobility non-profit Active SGV’s executive director David Diaz told SBLA he’s very pleased with the lane designs. “We’re happy to see the recent progress the City of El Monte is making on implementing the 2014 approved El Monte Bike Master Plan. The Ramona Blvd and Tyler Ave (N of Ramona) project designs contribute to improved multi-modal connectivity and safety for people biking. Designs even included considerations of the door zone! Personally, I travel along Tyler and Ramona multiple times a week and have never felt safer while riding my bike in El Monte. Excited for the future complete street projects in El Monte that include Valley Blvd, Merced Ave, Parkway Drive, and Garvey Ave.”

E-Bike Rebate Pilot Program: Sustainable energy initiative to launch July 1

Pasadena Water and Power (PWP), which provides electricity to more than 65,000 customers within the city of Pasadena, has unveiled a new e-bike rebate pilot program that will launch on July 1.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles defines e-bikes as “a bicycle fully equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.”

The new pilot rebates will apply to new Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes with a limit of two per PWP residential electric service account. Scooters, mopeds, segways and e-bike conversion kits will not qualify.

The rebate amounts will range from:

• $500 to $1,000 for e-bikes purchased at retailers within Pasadena.

20 years ago, the Arroyo Seco Parkway turned into a car-free party. Get ready for another

For the first time in 20 years, a section of the Arroyo Seco Parkway, the West Coast’s oldest freeway, is set to close down for people to walk, bike, skate and run.

On Oct. 29, ArroyoFest will allow car-free exploration of six miles of the 110 Freeway connecting Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Two decades ago, the first ArroyoFest was ahead of its time for Southern California, said Wesley Reutimann, co-founder and special programs director at ActiveSGV, one of the event organizers.

In June 2003, seven years before the first CicLAvia “open streets” event, ArroyoFest shut down the Arroyo Seco Parkway for three hours, giving thousands of people the chance to tour the freeway as they never had before.

“I had a real urge to take the exit to the 5,” bicyclist Steve Edberg told The Times in an article covering that 2003 gathering. “If I had 200 or 300 riders with me, I think we could have taken over that one too.”

The original ArroyoFest had been in the planning stages for 10 years before event organizers were able to persuade Caltrans and pull it off.

Twenty years later, Reutimann said, planning a revisit of the event has proved just as complicated.

“There are a lot of pieces that go into putting on an event like this,” he said. “It speaks volumes that the first one, they were able to successfully stage it in 2003.”

It’s a major undertaking involving various permit processes and agencies, including approval by the Pasadena City Council and a special event permit from Caltrans, according to Pasadena Now.

If the Netflix series “Unchained” doesn’t rapt American audiences, perhaps the new Greg LeMond feature film will connect them to cycling in a new way.

Premiering today in theaters across the country, “The Last Rider” is a feature-length documentary that chronicles Greg LeMond’s rock bottom year and his legendary comeback at the nail-biting 1989 Tour de France.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Alex Holmes, the race almost serves as a backdrop. Instead, viewers are offered an intimate portrait of one of America’s greatest athletes of all time as he maneuvres betrayal, childhood sexual abuse, getting shot, and coming back from the brink of death to face his rivals and win the Tour de France by just eight seconds — the closest winning margin in the race’s history till this day.

The film features never-before-seen footage from the 1989 race as well exclusive interviews with LeMond himself, his former coach Cyrille Guimard and his wife Kathy, whom LeMond credits for his success.

Rivers and Mountains Ride: Series by ActiveSGV

Join us for the first of 4 bike rides that will explore some of our SGV rivers and our San Gabriel Mountains and learn about the current efforts to complete the vision of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument! This ride will feature; the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel river tails with a stop at the Santa Fe Dam. The route is about 18.2 miles – on mostly separated bike paths.

This ride will start/finish in El Monte and travel on both city streets and bike paths. Due to the length, this ride is not recommended for anyone under the age of 12.

Pre-registration and attendance confirmation is required for all participants. If you are attending with other family members, each person must be registered separately in order to attend.

E-bikes of all types are encouraged, but not required or you can also register to ride a GoSGV e-bike FREE. Register now to guarantee your spot!
