The lanes will begin at the Long Beach Traffic Circle and will end at the Los Angeles River Bike Path, according to the California Department of Transportation. The goal of the project is to encourage community members to use alternate modes of travel rather than driving.

“This project will contribute to the growing bicycle network in the region and ensure that users of all abilities can travel safely on the State Highway System,” Caltrans said.

A peek inside our FREE ‘Adopt A Bike’ program

From Metro.net

BY

When Oswaldo Cruz opened his email and saw a message from school asking if he was interested in a free bike, his heart jumped with excitement. He filled out a simple form and a week later, he was the first to arrive at his school’s event in Hawthorne, where the bikes were going to be handed out. He chose one with his favorite colors: red and black. “I was very happy to receive it,” says 14-year-old. “I had a bike when I was little, and always dreamed of having another one.”

Mondays through Fridays, Oswaldo now bikes to Hawthorne Math & Science Academy, the only high school in the Hawthorne School District. “I used to walk more than 20 minutes to get to class. If I took just a few extra minutes to get ready, I ended up being late,” says the ninth grader. “Ever since I received my bike, three months ago, I’ve always been on time!” On weekends, Oswaldo uses his bike to meet up with friends in local parks.

The bike came into Oswaldo’s hands thanks to Adopt A Bike, a Metro program that works with community groups to provide residents of vulnerable communities in Los Angeles County with free bikes. The goal is to improve mobility options so community members can access schools, jobs, and recreation.

But where do these bikes come from?

Tennessee Tourism Invites Cyclists to 52 Stunning and Epic Landscapes with Bike Tennessee

From TravelandTourWorld.com

Tennessee Tourism invites cyclists to explore 52 stunning, epic landscapes with Bike Tennessee’s new routes, offering detailed navigation and breathtaking scenery.

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development (TDTD) is inviting cyclists to explore Tennessee through 52 newly curated road cycling routes that traverse the state’s picturesque landscapes. This initiative, named Bike Tennessee, was launched today at BikeTN.com and allows cyclists to engage with the routes via the Ride with GPS app.

Tennessee has earned the title of Ambassador for the popular Ride with GPS app, making all 52 routes readily available on the platform. Each Bike Tennessee route has been meticulously mapped to provide cyclists with detailed navigation and route information. The route descriptions offer valuable insights into the terrain, waypoints, hidden gems, and customizable modifications for each ride.

These routes were developed in collaboration with professional cycling guide Shannon Burke of Velo View Bike Tours, who brings over a decade of experience in leading cycling tours. Safety and scenery were prioritized in the selection process, resulting in 1,739 miles of mapped routes across 53 Tennessee counties. The routes, designed for seasoned cyclists, offer mostly rural, low-traffic experiences in some of Tennessee’s most scenic and historic landscapes, including 14 routes within Tennessee State Parks.

According to the Outdoor Industry Association, the outdoor recreation economy generates $11.9 billion annually for Tennessee. Bike Tennessee aims to leverage the growing cycling community to boost visitation and economic impact throughout the state.

1. Why is everyone using clipless pedals (and do I need them)?

Designed to transfer power more efficiently from your muscles to your pedals, clipless pedals attach to a cleat on the bottom of your shoe, allowing you to ride faster without exerting more effort as you can both push down and pull up on the pedals, and smooth out your pedal stroke for more efficiency. While most road cyclists use them, they’re certainly not necessary, especially if you’re still getting comfortable with the skills of cycling, like bike handling or shifting.
