Following years of contentious disagreement and controversy, the West Hollywood City Council approved an update to the Fountain Avenue Streetscape Project in three separate votes on Sept. 15.

The council approved plans for Phase 1 of the project and an agreement for services with transportation planning and engineering firm Fehr and Peers for the amount of $131,040 in a 3-2 vote, with Councilmembers John Heilman and Lauren Meister dissenting. The council unanimously approved implementing immediate traffic calming measures on Fountain Avenue, approved staff to report back on removing peak hour parking restrictions and authorized city staff to initiate Phase 2 of the project, which includes gathering proposals from design firms as well as an expansion of the steering committee for Phase 2. The council approved an exemption for the project from the California Environmental Quality Act in a 3-2 vote with Meister and Heilman again dissenting.
