Three-week racing is finally back, kicking off with the Giro d’Italia, which starts in Bulgaria tomorrow.
To get you warmed up for the racing to begin, we’ve sifted through the recent results of the riders aiming for the general classification to gauge how their form is going into the first men’s Grand Tour of the year.
There’s no doubt about it, Jonas Vingegaard is far and away the favourite to claim a maiden maglia rosa. Taking a different route to his expected summer showdown against Tadej Pogačar, the Dane is head and shoulders above the rest of the GC field and will be making his debut at the race. He’s had a quiet season so far to save himself for the Giro, with just two stage races and 15 days of racing in his legs so far, but that resulted in two wins from two at Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya.
Should he win the Giro, he will join the special club of winning all three Grand Tours, joining only seven other riders: Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Felice Gimondi, Jacques Anquetil, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome.
